The most famous “looking back” of all time was Lot’s wife. On the heels of the angelic instructions was the impending destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. Do not look behind you nor stay anywhere in the plain (Gen 19:17). They literally had to run for their lives. Lot didn’t approve of the lifestyle of Sodom, but as a leader in the community, he enjoyed the benefits of living in Sodom society (cf. Gen 19:1). While at the city of Zoar, the LORD rained destruction down on Sodom and Gomorrah.
Lot’s back was facing the scene of destruction; his wife who was behind him failed to heed the warning of the messengers from heaven and turned and looked intently with regret at the overthrow. Once the area of Sodom looked like the garden of the LORD (Gen 13:10); now her past was incinerated; she died instantly in Zoar. In the aftermath, Lot turned around and discovered to his horror that his wife was dead.
Such a command was not given to Abraham as he surveyed the destruction from Mamre (Gen 19:28). Abraham realized by the billowing smoke that there were not even ten righteous living there (Gen 18:32), but he also knew God would not destroy the righteous along with the wicked. Only three made it out alive.
The warning to all is to remember Lot’s wife (Lk 17:32). One who loves the world cannot escape destruction. Attachment to the things of this world could prove to be a fatal attraction if the world is in us like Sodom was in Lot’s wife.
"Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him" (1 Jn 2:15). <><
