M-G: 1.28.11 // Worthy to Suffer, Matthew 5:10a

The righteousness of Christ invites persecution; self-righteousness flees, for it cannot see the joy for the pain. Suffering is the expected outcome of our crosswalk in obedience to Christ (Lk 9:23). “Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution” (2 Tim 3:12). Even though the pain of persecution yields hurtful tears, sharing in Christ’s suffering brings great joy!

We can only imagine what Jesus saw when it was said of Him that He endured the cross for the joy that was set before Him (Heb 12:2). Those who desire ... endures for the joy! Rejoice and be exceedingly glad! “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory” (2 Cor 4:17).

Thank you, Jesus, for the promise of Your abiding presence to never leave us nor forsake us. Thank you when we are counted worthy to suffer for Your name’s sake. May we never become blinded by our pain to turn away; open our eyes to the joy set before us as You see it, that we may endure our cross as we follow You through it! Amen. <><
