M-G: 12.16.12 // A No-Brainer

Remember the massive rescue efforts of the miners at the San José copper mine near Copiapó, Chile in August of 2010? 33 men were trapped 2,300 feet beneath the Atacama Desert in a hopeless and helpless situation. After 69 days all 33 miners safely reached the surface thanks to the amazing efforts of NASA and the cooperation and resources of individuals and companies from around the world.

A rescue capsule or pod was designed (21″ in diameter and nearly 13′ in height, equipped with support mechanisms and survival equipment) with the ability to carry only one miner at a time to the surface. Nobody had to convince those imprisoned miners that the only way of getting out alive was getting in that capsule when his turn was up.

Now imagine, if you will, Christ is that capsule (Jn 14:6; Acts 4:12; 1 Cor 3:11) that God sent down to our world of darkness (Jn 3:16), and unless you entered into a personal relationship with Him by faith (Eph 2:8-9; Titus 3:5), by getting on board the capsule like the Chilean miners, you willfully reject God’s provision of salvation (1 Jn 2:2). You might say, “Who in their right mind would be that foolish to not get in the capsule?” Everyone who doesn’t have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, that’s who!

Every believer in Jesus Christ recognized his or her lost condition by the Holy Spirit before being rescued; you can’t save that which isn’t lost! The Chilean miners knew the escape pod provided for them was their only physical salvation – get in and live; refuse and eventually die; it was a no-brainer, nothing to lose. But in the spiritual realm, everyone without Christ is blinded through unbelief to the true spiritual condition of their heart and cannot see their own impending doom (cf. Jn 1:5; 2 Cor 4:4; Jer 17:9).

With each passing day, Jesus is at the ready to extract any lost soul from inevitable spiritual death, but the window of survival is closing (“those who are perishing,” 2 Cor 4:3). For many without Christ the rescue pod will remain empty for the very notion of needing to be saved is ridiculous to them and will eventually perish in their sin (1 Cor 2:14; Jn 8:24). The Holy Spirit has to reveal to them their lost condition before they realize their personal need of redemption (Jn 16:8; cf. Eph 2:1-5).

“He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my steps. He has put a new song in my mouth – praise to our God; many will see it and fear, and will trust in the LORD” (Psa 40:2-3).

We who have entered into that escape pod by faith must be mindful and faithful to extend the lifeline of the Word in truth and grace to a lost and dying world (cf. Isa 55:11), praying that their eyes will not only be opened to the truth before it is too late, but also that they will receive by faith God’s only provision for rescue, Jesus Christ. Make no mistake about it; no matter who they are, as long as they remain outside of Christ, they are perishing and are as good as dead with everything to lose! As far as God is concerned, the urgency for us to reach those without is a no-brainer (Mt 28:18-20; Acts 1:8).
