M-G: 2.9.16 // Big Blue

Have you ever read the poem by the British poet, William Henley (1849-1903) entitled, “Invictus?” He talks about the “unconquerable soul.” Let me quote you the last two lines of his fourth quatrain, “I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.”

But are any of us really the captain of our soul-ship? The only way our soul gets around is the body which is why we should take care of it, right? Let me ask you something; do we have any control over the seasons as a result of the tilt of the earth’s axis (~23.5 degrees) away from the sun’s axis? We know that all life on earth is traveling ~1.1k mph (if standing at the equator) as our planet spins on its axis, making one revolution per day. While the earth is spinning over 1k mph, it is also traveling ~67.1k mph in its annual elliptical orbit around the sun.

Can we change the tilt of the planet for more conducive weather in Tennessee? Can we stop or slow down the spinning of our terrestrial ball because it is beneath the rudder of our soul-ship? Can we break free from this unseen current around the sun? You know the answers. The very air that we breathe, the very life that we have is because of God. Everything we “own” is on loan from Him! And we have this arrogant audacity to say we are in control of our soul-ship?

All of this is done by our Creator to make life possible on Big Blue. Looking beyond earth, what do you see? You see a dreadfully cold darkness (nearing or at absolute zero) and myriads of twinkling stars in our galaxy and faraway places and more of the same beyond what we cannot see physically or with the aid of the Hubble telescope, peering into billions of light years of outer space. Our size in comparison to the universe makes us unquestionably infinitesimal. It makes the notion of “Invictus” somewhat – ludicrous!

So what can we change? We can change our eternal destiny with a choice, and we can choose to be more like Christ even though we are traveling over 67k mph like everybody else. We can choose as believers to be holy though we are powerless to stop or reroute the planet. In fact, it doesn’t take much cranial activity to realize that we are not getting off this speeding speck until death or rapture, but nobody contemplates that because there is no alternative in space. So what we have is a choice of making our time here on planet earth count for something for God’s glory or to be a marginal believer scooting through space or simply doing nothing and moving like the dickens anyway with the spinning and orbiting of our planet.

Whether we like the choices or not is irrelevant; you and I are not calling the shots in the planetary scheme of things. And one other thing, while we are spinning and orbiting, there is a spiritual warfare between the forces of good and evil taking place, and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize we are neither a master nor a captain as William Henley foolishly claimed with his poetical flare for the dramatics.

When you sense the scale of this universe and the power of the Creator who called it all into existence, ex nihilo or out of nothing, we realize that the earth is but a speck of dust in the Universe. What is man but a fragile, mortal soul-ship perched upon such a diminutive speck? Then entered into our 4-D world of LxWxH+Time the God-Man in order to redeem us from the condemnation of sin (Jn 3:16, 17, 18).

Before Your entrance into my life, O LORD, I was hastening through life with blinding speed heading toward a terrible end. By the grace of Your enduring mercy and lovingkindness, the darkness of my soul was conquered through faith in You (Eph 2:8-9); condemnation was lifted (Rom 8:1). So now in these latter times, when things seem so out of control and concerning, I find comfort knowing that you are in control because You are the sovereign Lord, the Captain of my ship; I shall never run aground, capsize, sink, or perish, regardless of the spinning and orbiting of things on Big Blue. <><
