It has been said that there are three basic types of churches: the knowing, the doing, and the being. The knowing is characterized by a dead orthodoxy that is merely intellectual, ritualistic, cold, and lifeless, going through the motions. The doing crowd emphasizes feelings and relaxed standards over knowledge, carrying on with all kinds of commotion.
The main desire of a being church is Christ-likeness that recognizes there is plenty to know and plenty to do! The being church is nothing more than a collection of imperfect people saved by the grace of God attempting to do a perfect work for the glory of God. Francois Carr put it this way, “It is not about the work that you do but the walk.”
The Greek word for “worthy” in our passage for today is axios from where we get our English word axiom. The meaning is being of equal weight or value. The word picture is of a pair of balance scales. On the one pan is “fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God,” and on the other pan is “of the Lord.” Walking worthy of the Lord is walking (conduct) in equal weight of Him, pound for pound, ounce for ounce, and of like value (1 Pet 1:15).
Every church has its own personality, and people normally gravitate to like kind. Are you a knowing worshiper, a doing worshiper, or a being worshiper? A being worshiper is focused on the other pan, “of the Lord,” to walk worthy of Him. When that happens, it all pans out for His glory. <><
