And I will make you swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell;
A marriage made in heaven, this is what
could be said of Isaac and Rebekah. Unlike his elder half-brother Ishmael,
Hagar’s son, who married an ungodly woman (Gen 21:21), Isaac will marry a
God-fearing woman. Abraham’s main concern in the choice of a wife for his son
was that he be married to a godly woman (Gen 24:3).
The content of chapter 24 of Genesis is
how the woman of God’s choosing for Isaac was found. Godliness was to be the
bedrock of the marriage in order for the promised seed to be blessed by God and
for the covenant made with Abraham to be honored – to be a father of many
nations. Blessed is the marriage whose God is Yahweh; blessed is the nation
whose God is Yahweh! <><
