Abraham bought his first and only piece of
land after 62 years of sojourning, a burial plot for Sarah. Because she was the
mother of the promised seed, she is, spiritually speaking, the mother of all
believers just as Abraham is our spiritual father. All those in Christ are of
the spiritual seed of Abraham (Gal 3:29). But she also is an example of a godly
woman in the New Testament (1 Pet 3:3-6).
Side by side she journeyed with her husband out of the city of Ur in Mesopotamia for Canaan, sharing a similar belief in the promise of God, and it was accounted to her for righteousness, too! She was with him every step of the way in a foreign land. She gave birth to Isaac, the heir of promise, at the age of 90! She was the only woman in the Bible given the honor of having her age mentioned at the time of her death.
Abraham mourned and wept for the love and partner of his life and learned that “life is 100% fatal” no matter the lifespan. But he did not mourn as those without hope (1 Thess 4:13); but mourned and wept he did and should, along with Sarah’s only son of 37 years. Isaac would mourn and weep for the death of his father 38 years later (Gen 25:7); Abraham was buried alongside Sarah in the cave of Machpelah (Gen 25:9; 23:19). Rather than succumbing to morbid despair over the loss of a loved one, we need to be following the example of Abraham, realizing that life is 100% fatal, barring the rapture. Listen to what the Apostle Paul had to say about growing old.
"For this reason we never become discouraged. Even though our physical being is gradually decaying, yet our spiritual being is renewed day after day. And this small and temporary trouble we suffer will bring us a tremendous and eternal glory, much greater than the trouble. For we fix our attention, not on things that are seen, but on things that are unseen (like Abraham and Sarah, added). What can be seen lasts only for a time, but what cannot be seen lasts forever" (2 Cor 4:16-18, TEV). <><
