Is not the whole land before you? Please separate from me. If you take the left, then I will go to the right; or, if you go to the right, then I will go to the left.
Now it got to the point that there was
no more room to accommodate all the flocks, herds, and tents of Abram and Lot
together. The situation was causing friction among their servants. So, Abram
suggested they go their separate ways. Abram could have chosen first but gave
that right to his nephew Lot. Lot chose the plain of Jordan for it was well
watered everywhere like the garden of the LORD. Lot went east; Abram dwelt in
the land of Canaan.
There was only one problem with the lush
plain of Jordan; the men that lived in Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinful
against the LORD. You know that this was the tragic turning point in Lot’s life
that day. Lot was snagged by the lust of the eyes. The lure was there, but
behind the lush was something sinister. The real blessing was in the place less
pleasing to the eyes, the less desirable land of Canaan, Lot’s other option.
Abram relinquishing the right of first choice reflected grace and consideration
for his nephew; Lot’s choice revealed his heart to be greedy and self-centered.
His uncle never contended his decision. Abram's life became fruitful, and Lot's
became barren.
Regardless of appearances, where God
wants us to live is truly the only place of personal blessing; anywhere else
would make us unfruitful and unhappy. We need to close our eyes to the world
and open our hearts to the LORD to know when to turn left or right, to move
forward or backward, or simply to stay put. God's choice is always better than
the first choice. <><
